General Information: Fluconazole is an antifungal medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as triazoles. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, thereby disrupting the growth and reproduction of fungi. Fluconazole is commonly used to treat a variety of fungal infections.

Indication

Fluconazole 150mg tablets are primarily used to treat the following fungal infections:

  • Vaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection): A single 150mg dose is often prescribed to treat vaginal candidiasis caused by Candida species.
  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: Fluconazole is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth and throat caused by Candida.
  • Esophageal Candidiasis: It is also used to treat fungal infections in the esophagus caused by Candida.
  • Systemic Fungal Infections: For patients with invasive fungal infections, such as cryptococcal meningitis or candidemia.
  • Prevention of Fungal Infections: Fluconazole is sometimes prescribed to prevent fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, such as those with HIV/AIDS or after organ transplants.
Dosage and Administration

Vaginal Candidiasis: A single dose of 150mg is typically effective for treating vaginal yeast infections.

Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: Typically, the dosage is 200mg on the first day, followed by 100mg once daily for 2 weeks.

Esophageal Candidiasis: The typical starting dose is 200mg on the first day, followed by 100mg to 400mg once daily depending on the severity.

Cryptococcal Meningitis: A typical dose is 400mg on the first day, followed by 200mg to 400mg daily for at least 6-8 weeks.

Prevention of Fungal Infections: The dose may vary, typically ranging from 100mg to 400mg daily depending on the patient's condition.

Precautions

Liver Function: Fluconazole can affect liver enzymes. Liver function should be monitored, especially in patients with pre-existing liver disease.

Kidney Function: Fluconazole is excreted via the kidneys, and dose adjustments may be required for patients with renal impairment.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Fluconazole is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in high doses, as it can harm the fetus. It should only be used in pregnancy when absolutely necessary and prescribed by a doctor. It can be passed into breast milk, so caution is needed when breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions: Fluconazole can interact with several medications, including warfarin, phenytoin, and cyclosporine, increasing the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking.

QT Prolongation: Fluconazole may cause prolonged QT interval, which can lead to serious heart rhythm problems. Caution is required in patients with heart disease or those taking other drugs that affect the heart's electrical activity.

Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to fluconazole, which could include skin rashes, fever, or difficulty breathing. Discontinue the medication and seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.

HIV/AIDS Patients: Patients with HIV/AIDS may require prolonged or repeated courses of fluconazole. Regular monitoring is recommended.
