NVREST-MD is a mouth-dissolving tablet formulation containing ondansetron, a medication commonly used to prevent nausea and vomiting. Ondansetron is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that works by blocking the action of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in triggering nausea and vomiting. This formulation is designed for patients who may have difficulty swallowing conventional tablets.
Prevention and Treatment of Nausea and Vomiting:
o After chemotherapy or radiation therapy (chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting)
o After surgery (post-operative nausea and vomiting)
Other Causes of Nausea and Vomiting: As prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Route of Administration: Oral mouth-dissolving tablet.
Typical dose for adults
o Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting: 4 mg taken orally 30 minutes before chemotherapy, followed by 4 mg every 8 hours for 1 to 2 days.
o Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting: 4 mg orally, taken 1 hour before the end of surgery, or as directed by the healthcare provider.
Administration: Place the tablet on the tongue, where it will dissolve quickly without the need for water. Swallow once the tablet has dissolved.
Hypersensitivity: Discontinue use and seek medical advice if allergic reactions (rash, itching, difficulty breathing) occur.
Liver Function: Caution is advised in patients with liver impairment. A reduced dose may be necessary for patients with severe liver disease.
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider during pregnancy. Ondansetron is classified as a Category B drug, indicating it has not been shown to harm the fetus in animal studies but should be used during pregnancy only when necessary.
Breastfeeding: Ondansetron is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Consult a healthcare provider before using if breastfeeding.
Electrolyte Imbalance: Use with caution in patients with electrolyte abnormalities (such as low potassium or magnesium levels), as it may increase the risk of irregular heart rhythms.
Hypersensitivity to Ondansetron: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ondansetron or any of its components.
Concomitant Use with Apomorphine: Ondansetron should not be used with apomorphine, a medication used to treat Parkinson's disease, as it can lead to serious cardiovascular events.
Effective Nausea and Vomiting Control: Ondansetron is highly effective in preventing and treating nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, surgery, and other factors.
Mouth-Dissolving Formulation: The tablet dissolves quickly in the mouth, making it ideal for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or require a fast-acting solution.
Non-Sedating: Ondansetron generally does not cause drowsiness, making it a preferred choice for patients who need to stay alert.
Fast Onset: Provides rapid relief from nausea and vomiting, especially when taken before chemotherapy or surgery.
Low Side Effect Profile: Ondansetron is generally well tolerated, with minimal sedative effects compared to other antiemetic drugs.
