Oxazep OD-300

Oxcarbazepine SR (Sustained Release) is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medication used primarily to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

The sustained-release (SR) formulation allows for a gradual release of the drug into the bloodstream over time, helping to maintain stable drug levels and reducing the need for frequent dosing.

It is chemically related to carbamazepine, but with a potentially better side-effect profile, especially with regard to cognitive impairment and skin reactions.

  • Recommended Usage
Indications
  • Epilepsy: Used to control partial seizures, including simple and complex seizures, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Oxcarbazepine may be used as an adjunctive treatment for bipolar disorder to stabilize mood and prevent the recurrence of manic or depressive episodes.
Dosage and Administration

Starting Dose: The typical starting dose for adults is 300 mg once daily in the evening. This can be adjusted based on individual response.

Maintenance Dose: The dose may gradually be increased, generally up to 600 mg to 1200 mg per day, depending on the condition being treated.

Administration: The tablet should be taken once daily with or without food. It is important to swallow the tablet whole and not chew or crush to maintain the sustained-release formulation.

Precautions

Hyponatremia (Low Sodium Levels): Oxcarbazepine can cause low sodium levels (hyponatremia), especially in elderly patients. Regular monitoring of sodium levels is recommended during treatment.

Skin Reactions: Although less common than with carbamazepine, severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome) can still occur. Patients should be monitored for any rash or signs of allergic reactions.

Pregnancy: Oxcarbazepine is classified as a Category C drug during pregnancy, meaning its safety during pregnancy has not been well established. It should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

Drug Interactions: Oxcarbazepine may interact with other medications, particularly those that affect liver enzymes or blood pressure. Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking.
