UNISPAS is a combination tablet that combines two active ingredients: dicyclomine, an antispasmodic, and mefenamic acid, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This combination is used to provide relief from abdominal pain and discomfort associated with gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): For abdominal cramps and discomfort associated with IBS.
Dysmenorrhea (Painful Menstruation): For the relief of menstrual cramps and associated pain.
Abdominal Spasms: For conditions causing abdominal cramping, such as colic and other gastrointestinal discomforts.
Route of Administration: Oral tablet.
Typical dose for adults:
o Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): 1 tablet (10 mg dicyclomine, 250 mg mefenamic acid) 2-3 times daily.
o Dysmenorrhea (Menstrual Pain): 1 tablet every 6-8 hours as needed during pain episodes.
Maximum Dose: Do not exceed 3 tablets per day.
Administration: Take the tablet with or without food, and swallow whole. If you experience stomach upset, consider taking it with food.
Gastrointestinal Disorders: Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or other serious GI conditions.
Liver and Kidney Function: Caution is advised in patients with liver or kidney impairment, as NSAIDs can affect these organs.
Heart Disease: Mefenamic acid (NSAID) can increase the risk of heart problems, so use cautiously in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease.
Dehydration: Dicyclomine may cause dry mouth, dizziness, and blurred vision; take care when driving or operating machinery.
Avoid in Pregnancy: Not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy due to potential risks to the fetus. Consult with a healthcare provider before use during the first two trimesters.
Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use, as both active ingredients can pass into breast milk.
Hypersensitivity: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to dicyclomine, mefenamic acid, or any other ingredients of the tablet.
Active Peptic Ulcer Disease: Due to the NSAID component (mefenamic acid), which can worsen gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding.
Severe Heart, Liver, or kidney disease: Use is contraindicated in individuals with severe impairment of heart, liver, or kidney function.
Dehydration or Obstruction: Contraindicated in patients with urinary or gastrointestinal tract obstruction.
Glaucoma: Dicyclomine may exacerbate narrow-angle glaucoma.
Relieves Abdominal Cramps: Dicyclomine works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, which helps to relieve spasms and cramping.
Reduces Menstrual Pain: Mefenamic acid, a potent NSAID, helps reduce inflammation and alleviates menstrual cramps.
Dual Action: The combination of an antispasmodic (dicyclomine) and an NSAID (mefenamic acid) provides effective relief from both the spasm and pain aspects of gastrointestinal and menstrual discomfort.
Fast-Acting: Provides relatively quick relief from abdominal discomfort and cramping.
Convenient Dosing: Only 1-2 tablets are needed per day, depending on the severity of symptoms, making it easier to manage the condition.
