Rosuvastatin Calcium + Fenofibrate

Rosuvastatin Calcium + Fenofibrate is a combination medication used for the management of dyslipidemia. It combines the benefits of a statin and a fibrate to effectively lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, reducing cardiovascular risk.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Rosuvastatin Calcium:
    • A statin that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver.
    • Lowers LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), total cholesterol, and triglycerides, while increasing HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol).
  • Fenofibrate:
    • A fibrate that activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α).
    • Enhances the breakdown and clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, effectively lowering triglycerides and increasing HDL-C.
  • Recommended Usage
Indications:
  • Mixed dyslipidemia (elevated LDL-C, triglycerides, and reduced HDL-C).
  • Severe hypertriglyceridemia.
  • Dyslipidemia in patients with metabolic syndrome or high cardiovascular risk.
Dosage and Administration:
  • Adults:
    • Rosuvastatin: 5–20 mg once daily.
    • Fenofibrate: Typically 145 mg once daily.
    • Dosage adjustments should be individualized based on lipid profile and tolerance.
  • Take the medication with or without food.
Precautions:
  • Hepatotoxicity: Monitor liver function tests periodically. Discontinue if significant elevations in liver enzymes occur.
  • Myopathy/Rhabdomyolysis: Risk increases with concomitant use of other lipid-lowering agents or in patients with renal impairment. Monitor for muscle pain or weakness.
  • Renal Impairment: Fenofibrate requires dose adjustments in patients with renal dysfunction.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Contraindicated during pregnancy (category X) and not recommended while breastfeeding.
  • Drug Interactions: Avoid concomitant use with other fibrates or high-dose statins.
Key Benefits:
  • Comprehensive Lipid Control: Reduces LDL-C and triglycerides while increasing HDL-C.
  • Dual Mechanism: Synergistic action of statins and fibrates addresses both cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: Improves lipid profiles in high-risk patients, reducing the likelihood of cardiovascular events.
  • Convenient Dosage: Combination therapy simplifies treatment regimens.
